Exciting News! School Achieves New Breakthrough in the National “Challenge Cup” Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition

On October 29, the final competition of the 18th National "Challenge Cup" Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, jointly organized by the Communist Youth League Central Committee, China Association for Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, National Student Union, and the Guizhou Provincial Government, was held at Guizhou University. This event attracted over 2,000 universities nationwide, with more than 400,000 staff and over 2.5 million students participating. South China University of Technology had 5 projects enter the national final, with our school's student team's project being one of them. It had previously won the "Challenge Cup" Guangdong Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition Grand prize and achieved a breakthrough by winning the second prize in the national final.

During the final, project leaders from universities across the country successively delivered speeches, showcasing creative and innovative solutions and preliminary results. The competition was divided into three tracks: natural sciences, philosophy and social sciences, and scientific invention and production. Our school's project, "Assisting ‘Waste Water Valorization’ - Design of Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Reactor and Study on the Operational Efficiency of Ammonia Separation" belonged to the scientific invention and production track. The project members are Chen Peiyan, Su Jiayu, and Lu Xinyang, with guidance from Professor Chen Yan, Professor Feng Chunhua, and Ms Lv Xiaoting. The team's project achieved the resourceful transformation of nitrates by using electrochemical methods to reduce nitrates into economically valuable ammonia products. This strategy transformed the nitrate wastewater treatment industry from "capital investment" to "economic output", creating a new approach to nitrate wastewater treatment. The project successfully converted water pollutants, nitrates, into high-value ammonia products and completed small-scale and pilot experiments during the production process. Compared to the widely used denitrification technology, the team's technology significantly reduces processing costs, providing a new solution for complete denitrification of wastewater and economic value creation.

It is reported that the responsible students for this project come from the second party branch of the Graduate students, which is the fourth batch of model party branches cultivated by the Guangdong Province. This award is one of the achievements of the model party branch. In recent years, the School of Environment and Energy has further intensified student innovation and entrepreneurship cultivation efforts. By hosting the Yida Creative Competition school competition and the Hualv Environmental Protection Innovation Competition, it explores student innovation and entrepreneurship projects. Regularly organizing "Gathering Energy" luncheons provides a communication bridge for teachers and students participating in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. Inviting teachers from the school's Youth League Committee and Academic Affairs Office to analyze innovation and entrepreneurship competition policies for school teachers. In-depth integration with school-enterprise resources further strengthens industry-university-research cooperation. In 2023, in addition to this award, the School of Environment and Energy student team also won the only special prize in the Yida National Creative Competition, the first prize in the National University Student Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Social Practice and Technology Competition, and the gold prize in the ninth China International "Internet+" University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Guangdong Provincial Finals, among other important innovation and entrepreneurship competition awards.
