SCUT is strengthening links with several major universities in the US and Canada, after a delegation of SCUT travelled to these universities from March 22 to 29, and reached consensus with them on advancing further cooperation at the Guangzhou International Campus.

The delegates were led by Professor Yu Qijun, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, and Professor Douglas Ruth, Chief Scientist and Dean of SCUT’s Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering at the Guangzhou International Campus. Their destinations included the University of Michigan (UM) in the US, and McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario (UWO), both in Canada.

At the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Professor Shixin Jack Hu, Vice President for Research of the University of Michigan, expressed delight of building the Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering together with SCUT. He believed that the two sides would advance cooperation in developing subjects and courses, exchanging faculty resources and promoting university-industry collaboration and technology transfer.

Professor Baoyu Chen of the University of Michigan-Dearborn said in a meeting with SCUT’s delegation that he was expecting to see the College of Engineering & Computer Science at UM-Dearborn working together with SCUT on “2+2” and “3+1” joint student training programs as well as on scientific research.

SCUT’s Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering at the Guangzhou International Campus is built upon the partnership with the Shien-Ming Wu Foundation and the Shien-Ming Wu Manufacturing Research Center of the University of Michigan. The school is the first university faculty named after the late Professor Shien-Ming Wu, a world-renowned mastermind of manufacturing engineering.

In Canada, SCUT’s delegates were received by Professor Gu Xu of McMaster’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor Karen Mossman, McMaster’s Associate Vice-President for Research. The two sides agreed to carry out faculty and students exchange and research collaboration in a few fields including new materials, high-end manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and biomedicine.

Then at the University of Western Ontario, Mark Daley, UWO’s Associate Vice-President for Research, expressed high interest in working together with SCUT at the Guangzhou International Campus and was willing to talk about details of setting up the cooperation.
