Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) remarkability stands from its soft elastomeric nature, biocompatibility, bio-adhesion, high swelling and water holding capacities and mass transport properties, among other. It finds applications in food, biomedical, and functional materials. Our research group is using BC to fabricate a series of biomedical, functional materials such as skin tissue repair materials, artificial blood vessels, intervertebral disc replacement materials, controlled-release drug carriers, injectable embolization agent, electroactive hydrogel and several others. Furthermore, we are adopting engineered Gluconacetobacter xylinum and utilizing the assembly and arrangement of the cellulose fibrils to achieve highly specific, three-dimensional micro-patterns, which provide highly sophisticated multi-level tissue engineering scaffolds. They induce directed cell adhesion and aggregation for applications in regenerative medicines. Some of these developments will be discussed in my talk.
