Meeting

On April 18th, Janos Pasztor, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative, and his delegation visited South China University of Technology (SCUT). Zhang Xichun, Chancellor of SCUT, welcomed the guests.

Address by Zhang Xichun

Zhang Xichun, on behalf of SCUT, welcomed the guests and introduced the excellent current situation in the running of SCUT's One University, Three Campuses in One City initiative, especially highlighting the achievements of the Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC) in implementing the model of Internationalization at Home. He expressed that SCUT seizes the opportunity of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's international education reform, vigorously constructs GZIC with the support of governments at all levels, and innovatively explores a new model of cultivation that combines Internationalization at Home and Two Way Approach to Internationalization. On one hand, GZIC gathers high-quality global educational resources to provide students an international environment equivalent to that of world-class universities. On the other hand, GZIC collaborates with world’s top universities to expand the scale of high-level emerging engineering summer schools, continuously attracts overseas students to study at SCUT. Zhang hopes that Janos Pasztor will further strengthen the connection with SCUT to help faculty and students understand the international frontier situation in relevant fields, promote participation in major international research cooperation projects or topics, attract students to actively engage in internships or work in international organizations, and make greater contributions to building a community with a shared future for humanity.

Speech by Janos Pasztor

Janos Pasztor highly appreciated the remarkable achievements of SCUT. He mentioned being impressed by the scene where an undergraduate student from Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering won the Best Project Team with outstanding results at the Elite Youth Talent Program on Global Governance and International Organizations held last year at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, where he served as a judge. He fully affirmed the educational effectiveness of Internationalization at Home at GZIC and believed that the campus's layout of emerging engineering disciplines and interdisciplinary talent cultivation model are in line with today's talent needs of multilateral organizations and international academic institutions. Based on his nearly 50 years of work experience in international organizations in fields such as energy, environment, climate change, and sustainable development, he expressed his hope to plan new ideas and methods and enhance resilience in addressing global governance challenges together with the faculty and students of SCUT.

Lecture

During the visit, Janos Pasztor had in-depth exchanges with professors from Smart Energy research group of the School of Future Technology, after which heheld a lecture titled Climate Change in the Context of the Polycrisis for students and faculty at GZIC, calling on all parties to continue to pay attention to global climate warming and other issues closely related to human destiny, gather strength from all parties, and jointly address the challenges of sustainable development.

Directors and relevant representatives from the International Office, Office of Global Affairs, GZIC, Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering and School of Future Technology participated in the events.
