On March 9,2015 Zhan Ying, a SCET senior student of Civil Engineering, received Hong Kong PhD Fellowship offered by Research Grants Council of Hong Kong after competing with over 6,000 candidates.
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, aims at attracting best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions. The candidates, either undergraduates or postgraduates, should be full of academic excellence and aim to get the degree of PhD. The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$240,000 (HK$20,000 per month) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 to each winner. As one of the most competitive scholarship in the world, more than 200 students would be awardees in the 2015/16 academic year after a competition of over 6000 candidates, among which 500 were nominated by their universities. In previous years, nearly 60% of the awardees came from the mainland, and most of them graduated from Tsinghua University or Peking University. What's more, few undergraduates could obtain the Fellowship because the majority of the awardees were postgraduates.
Zhan Ying was enrolled by School of Foreign Languages without mandatory admission exam as an excellent middle school student four years ago. Then he changed his major from English to Civil Engineering when he was a sophomore. And now his hard work and good academic performance have helped him receive the PhD admission of University of California at Berkeley which boasts Top 1 University for Civil Engineering in the world.
