On the afternoon of February 11, the 5th Structural Design Competition for College Students of Central and South China is ended in Zhengzhou University. This competition is organized by the of Civil Engineering Design Competition Committee of Central and South China, and the Institute of Civil Engineering of Henan Province, Zhengzhou University. The competition attracted 47 delegates from 45 universities in 7 provinces including Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Hainan and Fujian.
Students, Ou Huanong, Guo Houzuo, Wang Siya, Qiu Zhiyu, Hu Jianbin and Lin Jingcong, from School of Civil Engineering and Transportation, South China University of Technology, took part in the competition. Under the supervision of the instructor team (Wang Zhan, He Wenhui, Chen Qingjun, Ji Jing, and the team leader: Wang Yanlin), after spending 16 hours in the competition site for structural model fabrication, loading test competitions, expert scoring and presentation, two teams won the third prize, a team won the Best Creative Award and our school won the Outstanding Organization Award.

In practical circumstance, the high-voltage transmission tower system is the carrier of high-voltage electric energy, and it is an extremely important lifeline project. It has the similar characteristics with the high-rise and large span structure such as high flexibility. The High-voltage transmission tower system is sensitive to the dynamic loading such as earthquake and strong winds. It is prone to fatigue damage and structural collapse, resulting in serious accidents. Therefore, the background of the 5th Central South Region Structural Design Competition is the design of the high-voltage transmission tower, which is subjected to the lateral and/or torsional loads, given the contains including clearance limit and vertical weight, with applied to the model,.

The teams of the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation made a careful preparation for the competition. Over a month, from model scheme to over 10 times for model fabrication, the students and teachers spent a lot of effort. The model material property bamboo was highly influenced by the cold and humid weather of the computation city Zhengzhou, affecting the performance of the fabricated model in the competition.

It is reported that, the South China University of Technology sponsored the 1st Structural Design Competition for College Students of South and Central China, then other universities in South and Central China took terms to sponsor this competition every year. This competition is a good complementation of the Structural Design Competition for National College Students. It provides an open platform for the civil engineering students in the seven provinces of Central and South China, aiming to improve the students' practical ability, innovation ability and mutual learning. In the closing ceremony of the competition, the Competition Committee selected the Guangxi University to be the sponsor for the 6th Structural Design Contest for College Students in South Central China in 2018 (Photo: the Office of Student Affairs, School of Civil Engineering and Transportation; Editor: Mu He-Qing, Zheng Z)
