Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Research and Development Center of Guangdong Province was built up based on the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering in the South China University of Technology, after being authorized by Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Development Reform Commission of Guangdong Province and The Economic & Information Commission of Guangdong Province. It is the only R&D center in Guangdong Province in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and the only organization to enable to educate high-level engineers and academic researchers in the area of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in South China. It can offer Ph.D. and master degrees in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. There are one second-level discipline authorized with a doctor degree in the field of design and construction of naval architecture and ocean structure and one first-level discipline authorized with master degree in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering in the center. Currently, there are 10 Professors in the center, 58% of academic staff is professors and associate professors, and 78% of academic staff have a Ph.D. degree.

The research fields include development and design of novel ships, energy-saving techniques, structure mechanics and hydrodynamics of naval architecture and ocean engineering, advanced design and manufacturing technology for naval architecture and offshore structures, ocean energy utilization and underwater systems, underwater acoustics, offshore engineering, and so on. There are many advanced facilities in the center, including the largest ship-model towing-tank in the South China area, beach and offshore engineering Labs, the center of ship materials, and the vibration and noise center of naval architecture and ocean engineering. The following services can be provided by the center: measurement of ship speed and resistance, measurement of seakeeping, development of ocean engineering instruments, development of energy-saving equipment for ships, development of novel ship propeller, development of ship materials, vibration and noise controls, vibration and noise measurement for ships and ocean structures, river sedimentation and engineering dynamics, treatment of tidal estuary, development of tidal barriers and research on the effect of ocean wave to buildings.
