From July to August of 2019, all the students of 2016 grade class of road and bridge engineering have participated the 3-weeks internship at the construction departments of the Poly Changda Engineering Co., Ltd (Poly Changda) and the Guangdong Guanyue Highway and Bridge Co., Ltd. Our students have taken this opportunity to learn the advanced construction technologies for road and bridge. Through this field internship, their professional quality and ability of engineering innovation have been improved, proving them a clear vision on future career planning. Our department has created a national practice training center for road and bridge engineering together with the Poly Changda Engineering Co., Ltd. Through the continuous reforms on practice teaching mode during last three years, our department has achieved great success in practice teaching.
During July 13th-14th, our students had an internship training at the Professional Training Department of Changda Highway Engineering. Four professional engineers from the company, including senior engineer Haiqing Li, senior engineer Yonggang Xu, Certified Safety Engineer Quan Pang, and Senior Contract Manager Li Cai, delivered the lectures on “Overview of Bridge Development in China and New Technology of Cross-Sea Bridge”, “Comprehensive Asphalt Concrete Construction Technology for Steel Deck of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge”, “Highway Engineering Safety Management” and “Highway Engineering Contract Management”, respectively. Our students have benefited a lot from this two-day internship training. Besides, our students also had an opportunity to visit the exhibition hall of Poly Changda. During the visit, the remarkable achievements of constructing our national transportation infrastructures for the“Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge”, “Humen Bridge”, “Hangzhou Bay Bridge “and “Nansha Bridge” have been shown. Our students felt very proud on those national projects. They were also encouraged to take more responsibility for building better road and bridge for our country.


From July 15 to August 2, our students were divided into seven groups and joined several construction projects respectively, including the Section B of the Central Shanxi Ring Expressway General contract Project, Section B of Zhongshan Tanzhou Express Line General contract Project, Section T1 Reconstruction and extension Section of Kaiyang Expressway, Zhuhai Xianghai Bridge Branch Project TJ1 Section, Donglei Expressway Project Department TJ3 Section, and Meiping Expressway Section 2 constructed by Poly Changda.
This practice internship employed the guidance of school-enterprise cooperation mode and the double mentor system. The professional engineers from the construction company guided the students to participate in the works at technological department and management department in the construction site, and also recorded the students’ field work. Five faculty members from our university, i.e. Lijuan Zhang, Shaohuai Wang, Xiaoxia Zhen, Xiaofei Wang, and Niujing Ma, were responsible for following up the internship arrangement, checking the internship progress at the construction site, guiding the students to complete the daily internship log and the writing of internship report. During the 3-week practice internship, the five teachers paid close attention to the students’ study activities, reviewed the practice log every day, and solved the problems encountered during the students’ practice.
It was the first time for those students to visit the construction site and to learn practical construction technology of road and bridge at the front line. All of them were very excited. The student group at Donglei were very lucky to learn the full process of the movable formwork construction method for the cast-in-situ concrete box girder of Tongminghai sea crossing bridge. The Zhongshan Group have learnt about the solution for solving the problem caused by the inclined pile at pile foundation construction site. The Kaiyang group have assisted the workers in concrete pouring and learnt the concrete maintenance technology. The Meiping group went to the emergency construction site of Renzishi tunnel to measure the tunnel settlement, and learnt the technologies of driving anchor bolt support, shotcrete, controlling underground water seepage and so on. While studying at the construction site, our students also reviewed the design drawings and design materials, learned the new technology of BIM road and bridge construction management, continuously improving their professional knowledge and professional quality.
During the 3-week internship, our students worked together with the professional engineers and workers during day and night. This help them to learn the working enthusiastic and fighting spirit from the engineers and workers. They also got a close view of the humanistic atmosphere of the construction company. This can encourage them to contribute to road and bridge construction in their future career. In addition, our students got to know each other more during the team work, and built up solid friendship within the team. The professional knowledge and engineering experience will create a solid foundation for their future career.
