The Department of civil engineering is one of the six departments at the beginning of the establishment of the former South China Institute of Technology (renamed South China University of technology in 1988). It has a school running history of more than 80 years and has trained more than 12000 senior technical talents in the design, construction and management of Construction Engineering, underground engineering, road and bridge engineering for the country. It has a great influence in the whole country, especially in South China, Hong Kong and Macao, and has won a good reputation. Many graduates have become leaders of competent government departments, well-known experts and scholars, and have trained one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering and three structural design masters.
The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Modern Civil Engineering Technology of South China University of Technology (SCUT) was founded on the basis of civil engineering of SCUT and has been approved by the department of science and technology of Guangdong province since 2021. Based on the national ‘one belt one road’ strategy and the development plan of ‘Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Bay Area’, the laboratory concentrates on developing the green, sustainable, industrialized and intelligent civil engineering disciplines. The laboratory includes four areas of research: 1) Recycling of solid waste of buildings and green engineering structure, 2) Intelligent construction and digital operation and maintenance of engineering structures, 3) Full life cycle disaster prevention and mitigation of engineering structures, and 4) Urban underground space development and road performance improvement.
The laboratory has 41 scientific and technical research personnel, with Professor Wu Bo as the director of the laboratory and Professor Ou Jinping (Chinese Academician of Engineering) as the present director of the academic committee. The first meeting of the first academic committee of the laboratory was held on September 16, 2021, and the construction scheme of the laboratory was approved.
With strong support of SCUT and the department of science and technology of Guangdong province, the laboratory will 1) develop the recycling of building solid waste and green carbon reduction technology, innovate the sustainable engineering structural system, and realize the green and coordinated development of civil engineering construction in Guangdong province, 2) Develop new technologies for intelligent construction, digital operation and maintenance of engineering structures, and promote the construction, operation and maintenance of smart cities in Guangdong province, 3) Develop new technologies for disaster prevention and reduction in the whole life cycle of infrastructure, improve its ability to withstand extreme loads and harsh environment, and provide technical support for the construction of resilient cities in our province, 4) Develop new technologies for urban underground space and road performance improvement, improve the operation level of underground space and intercity transportation, and speed up the construction of new transportation network in Guangdong province.
