On October 10, 2023, Professor Chang Kai from Renmin University of China and Professor Tomoaki Ishii from Meiji University of Japan were invited to give lectures in the School of Public Administration. Hosted by Guangdong Social Security Research Center, the lecture focuses on the digital economy and labor issues in East Asian societies based on a comparative perspective. The lecture was chaired by Professor Huang Yan and attended by Professor Jia Hailong, Professor Yu Dengke, Professor Li Min, Associate Professor Fan Lulu, Assistant Researcher Wang Qi, and many teachers and students from the School of Public Administration.
From the historical dimension, Professor Ishii systematically sorted out the connection between the political and economic changes in Japanese society and the transformation of labor relations, with special emphasis on analyzing the social structural factors that the “labor-management relationship” in the Japanese academic context derived and developed from the concept of “labor relations”. Professor Chang Kai focused on the fundamental attributes of platform labor relations in the Digital Era, mainly from the dual attributes of economy and personality. Professor Chang also made a thorough critical analysis of the applicability of the concept of “third type of workers” in China's platform economic labor and advocated that some types of platform workers should be included in the scope of labor law protection.
This lecture enhanced the understanding of our teachers and students on the Digital Era and social labor issues in East Asia and also boosted research on frontier issues of labor relations.
